Naute Dam Overflows, Controlled Water Releases Begin in Namibia
The Naute Dam near Keetmanshoop, Namibia, has exceeded its full capacity following recent heavy rainfall, prompting NamWater to initiate controlled water releases. As of 08:30 on April 11, 2026, the dam's water level reached 732.38 meters, equating to 105.4% of its capacity, or 88 million cubic meters. To manage the overflow and ensure the dam's safety, water is being released at a rate of 200 cubic meters per second into the Löwen River, which feeds into the Orange River. NamWater has advised downstream communities to remain vigilant as water levels may rise rapidly due to the increased outflow. This situation underscores the importance of proactive water management in safeguarding Namibia's water resources.
