British Government Condemns 'Intimidating and Thuggish Behavior' of Anti-Immigrant Protesters in Portsmouth and Dover
The British government has condemned the 'intimidating and thuggish behavior' of anti-immigrant demonstrators who confronted police and attempted to block migrants arriving in Portsmouth, England. Hundreds of protesters, many masked and dressed in dark clothing, gathered in Portsmouth on Sunday to prevent lifeboats from bringing migrants ashore and subsequently tried to block buses transporting new arrivals to a processing facility. This incident follows similar demonstrations in Dover on Saturday, where masked anti-immigration protesters blocked roads leading to the port, disrupting traffic and cargo. Both protest groups reportedly had ties to Daniel Thomas, an ally of far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson. The government emphasized that while peaceful protest is fundamental to democracy, it must not escalate into disorder. The migrants involved in the Portsmouth incident had made a longer and riskier journey from Normandy, a departure from the usual Calais routes.
