Teenager Drowns Off Rockaway Beach Amid Rip Tide Incident
A tragic drowning occurred off Rockaway Beach, New York, on Sunday evening, August 10, 2026, when two swimmers were caught in a rip tide after lifeguards had gone off duty. The incident took place near Beach 84th Street at approximately 7:30 p.m. Emergency responders, including NYC Parks lifeguards, FDNY, and NYPD Aviation and Marine units, were dispatched to the scene. While the 18-year-old swimmer was rescued and brought ashore in stable condition, the 17-year-old was found unconscious near Beach 83rd Street.
