IBM Advances Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing with Cryogenic System Integration
IBM has achieved a significant engineering milestone by successfully connecting and cooling two modular cryogenic systems to temperatures below 15 millikelvin. This infrastructure project is a crucial step towards the company's goal of building IBM Quantum Starling, a fault-tolerant quantum computer planned for delivery in 2029. The combined system, standing over eight feet tall and wide, reached ultracold temperatures in less than five days, demonstrating the ability to create the extreme environments necessary for superconducting qubits. This development addresses the infrastructure challenges of cooling, wiring, chip connectivity, and error correction that are critical for scaling quantum computers. Each new module provides up to 12 times more wiring space than previous systems, and their box-shaped design allows for the integration of multiple refrigeration units.
