Haryana Sanitation Workers Stage Mass Tonsure Protest Over Job Regularisation Demands
Sanitation workers across Haryana, India, have escalated their month-long strike by staging mass tonsure protests, shaving their heads as a symbol of anger against the state government's handling of their demands. The workers have been on strike since August 6, advocating for the regularisation of their jobs among 17 total demands. Demonstrations and dharnas were held in multiple locations, including Ambala, Karnal, Jhajjar, Fatehabad, and Charkhi Dadri. The ongoing strike has led to significant garbage accumulation in various parts of the state. In response, the Haryana government has directed striking employees to return to work by September 5, threatening legal and departmental action for non-compliance. The Urban Local Bodies Department has also accused striking employees of preventing others from working and damaging sanitation equipment, leading to FIRs against some individuals.
