Cruz, who was the Republican Party's runner-up in the 2016 presidential primary, has aligned his platform with President Trump's agenda and actively promotes their shared goals. As President Trump's time in the White House concludes, Senator Cruz has indicated his desire to seek the presidency, stating in an interview with Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick that he wants to be "right in the middle of these fights" and that elected office is the place to do it. President Trump has offered support for Cruz, describing him as "very talented" and a "very good friend," though he has also indicated potential preferences for Vice President JD Vance or State Secretary Marco Rubio as successors.
