Maryland GOP Lawmaker Opposes Special Session on Redistricting Amid Partisan Tensions
Maryland is preparing for a legislative special session focused on congressional redistricting, scheduled for August 3-5. The session aims to consider a constitutional amendment that would alter redistricting standards, potentially favoring Democrats. The amendment seeks to apply current districting requirements only to state legislative districts, not congressional ones. If passed by a three-fifths majority in both legislative chambers, the amendment will be put to a public vote in November. GOP lawmakers, including Senate Minority Leader Stephen Hershey and State Sen. Bryan Simonaire, have expressed strong opposition, arguing that the session is a Democratic attempt to suppress Republican representation. Simonaire has launched an ad campaign against the amendment, labeling it as voter suppression. The session follows a broader national trend of redistricting efforts, with states like Texas and California already redrawing maps to gain political advantage.
