South Bay Coalition Forms to Advocate for Worker Protections Against High-Tech Disruptions
A new coalition, the People’s Tech Coalition, has been launched in the South Bay, bringing together unions, community organizations, nonprofits, youth groups, and residents. The coalition's primary goal is to advocate for legal protections at both state and local levels to address growing worker concerns regarding displacement and other workplace disruptions caused by the rapid deployment of high-tech tools, including artificial intelligence and algorithmic surveillance. Organizers emphasize the need for workers to have a greater say in how technology is utilized in their workplaces, schools, and hospitals, rather than leaving these decisions solely to corporations and CEOs. The coalition is also addressing broader technology concerns beyond the workplace, such as data collection tools used for setting rental prices and the use of automated license plate readers for surveillance, which has created tension between law enforcement and privacy advocates.
