Philz Coffee Reverses Decision on Pride Flags After Employee and Customer Backlash
Philz Coffee, a San Francisco-based coffee chain, has reversed its decision to remove Pride flags from its stores following significant backlash from employees and customers. The initial decision, framed as a move towards inclusivity by CEO Mahesh Sadarangani, was met with swift opposition, including an online petition that garnered over 7,300 signatures. The company, known for its support of the LGBTQ+ community, faced criticism from various quarters, including state senator Scott Wiener. The reversal was influenced by discussions with San Francisco Pride leaders, who highlighted the importance of the Pride flag as a symbol of safety and belonging. Sadarangani issued an apology, acknowledging the mistake and expressing a commitment to making amends.
