Michigan Expands Universal Pre-Kindergarten Program for Four-Year-Olds
Michigan is significantly expanding its 'PreK for All' initiative, aiming to enroll approximately 70,000 four-year-olds by the 2026-2027 school year. This expansion follows Governor Gretchen Whitmer's proposal in February 2023 to offer free pre-kindergarten to all Michigan four-year-olds. The program focuses on improving access, affordability, and quality in early childhood education. Jeff Capizzano, president and founder of the Policy Equity Group, who worked with Whitmer’s PreK for All taskforce, noted that the state has been diligently following a comprehensive roadmap developed with input from the University of Michigan and various stakeholders. The initiative has eased administrative burdens by making the program universal and is actively piloting the inclusion of family child care providers to ensure a diverse range of options for families.
