Texas Solar Power Prevents Blackout Amid Record Heat
Texas narrowly avoided a major power grid failure in July 2026, thanks to its rapidly expanding solar power infrastructure. According to the Texas Tribune, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) managed to meet record-breaking energy demands on July 21 and 22, when temperatures soared to a heat index of 116°F (46.7°C) in Dallas. Solar power played a critical role, providing over 45% of the state's electricity at peak times and creating a 20,000-megawatt buffer that kept the grid stable. This marks a significant improvement from February 2021, when a winter storm caused the grid to collapse, leaving over 4.5 million residents without power and resulting in hundreds of deaths.
