Electricians Warn Against Overpowering Light Fixtures, Citing Fire Risks and Component Degradation
Electricians are consistently observing damage to light fixtures caused by consumers using light bulbs with wattage exceeding the fixture's maximum recommended limit. This common practice, often done without checking the wattage indicated on the socket, leads to overheating. The primary danger stems from the fact that a light fixture is designed to dissipate only a limited amount of heat. When a bulb that is too powerful is used, especially in enclosed globes or fabric lampshades, the heat becomes trapped around the bulb's base. Incandescent and halogen bulbs, in particular, convert up to 95% of their energy into heat, significantly contributing to this issue. This excessive heat degrades the fixture's components, such as cracked sockets, deteriorated cables, and browning of plastic parts. Over time, this can lead to loose electrical contacts and, in severe cases, poses a fire risk.
