Pittsburgh Sports Teams Unite to Combat Food Insecurity with #BurghProud Challenge
The Pittsburgh Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers have launched the #BurghProud Challenge to address food insecurity in southwestern Pennsylvania. This initiative encourages participants to raise funds for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank by committing to walk or run 30 miles over 30 days in June. Participants can start fundraising campaigns through GoFundMe, with incentives such as campaign T-shirts and exclusive experiences with the sports teams for those who raise significant amounts. The Richard King Mellon Foundation supports the effort with a $1 million matching grant to amplify donations. The campaign aims to mobilize thousands to support neighbors facing food insecurity, particularly during the summer when children lose access to school-provided meals.
