UNESCO Committee Adds D-Day Beaches and Other Sites to World Heritage List
A United Nations committee meeting in South Korea has added several significant sites to the World Heritage List, including World War II's D-Day landing beaches in northern France, Greece's Mount Olympus, the ancient Japanese capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara, and South Sudan's Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape. The French designation includes the five Normandy landing beaches—Omaha, Utah, Sword, Gold, and Juno—along with the Pointe du Hoc assault site, all pivotal in the campaign to liberate Western Europe from Nazi occupation during World War II. The Japanese sites in Nara prefecture preserve archaeological remains from the 6th- to 8th-century capitals, which were instrumental in establishing Japan's first centralized state. South Sudan's Boma-Badingilo is noted for hosting one of the world's largest land mammal migrations.
