Lawsuit Filed to Block Relocation of Kensington High School Students Due to Asbestos Discovery
A lawsuit has been filed seeking to prevent the relocation of Kensington High School students in Philadelphia after asbestos was discovered in their school building. The School District of Philadelphia plans to temporarily move over 400 Kensington High School students to the vacant Austin Meehan Middle School while asbestos removal takes place. The lawsuit was filed by Harold Brown, whose son attends Abraham Lincoln High School, and Peter J. McDermott, who is party to a Community Benefits Agreement involving the Lincoln/Meehan campus. They argue that the relocation creates safety and learning concerns, citing that the Lincoln High campus is already overcrowded with approximately 2,400 students and that bringing in additional students would strain resources. The plaintiffs claim the district identified the asbestos issue in mid-July but did not notify families until mid-August, less than two weeks before classes were scheduled to start.
