Justice Department Sues Washington D.C. Over Massive Sewage Spill into Potomac River
The Justice Department has filed a federal complaint against Washington, D.C., and its water authority, DC Water, over a significant sewage leak into the Potomac River. The incident involved the collapse of a 72-inch pipeline, known as the Potomac Interceptor, which resulted in 244 million gallons of raw sewage spilling into the river. The complaint alleges that DC Water failed to maintain the pipeline, despite being aware of its deteriorating condition. The spill has raised concerns about the aging infrastructure in the U.S. and the need for cities to invest in their wastewater systems. Maryland has also filed a separate lawsuit seeking damages for the environmental impact.
