Summer's Impact on Human Activity and Sleep Patterns
Summer is often seen as a vibrant season, but it poses unique challenges to human physiology. According to Newsweek, wearables like Oura rings and WHOOP bands have provided insights into how summer affects human activity and sleep. During warmer months, there is an increase in outdoor activities such as kayaking, golf, and hiking. However, the extended daylight hours and warmer temperatures lead to reduced sleep duration, with Oura users averaging 16 fewer minutes of sleep per night. Sleep scores dropped by about 3 points, and REM sleep decreased due to later bedtimes. The 'Hot Bedroom' tag saw a significant increase, indicating discomfort during sleep. On the hottest days of the June 2025 U.S. heat wave, physical activity decreased, with users taking 800-1,250 fewer steps and shorter workout durations.
