California Department of Insurance Takes Action Against State Farm Over Wildfire Claims Mishandling
The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is taking action against State Farm following an investigation into the mishandling of insurance claims from the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. The CDI alleges that State Farm violated the Unfair Insurance Claims Practices Act, with 398 violations identified in a market conduct examination. The investigation, ordered by California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, was prompted by consumer complaints indicating a pattern of unlawful behavior in more than half of the claims reviewed. State Farm policyholders filed approximately 11,300 residential claims related to the wildfires, accounting for nearly one-third of all claims filed across all insurers. The CDI found that State Farm delayed, underpaid, and complicated the claims process for policyholders. State Farm has responded by affirming its commitment to California recovery and disputing the CDI's characterization of its practices.
