Artificial Intelligence Uncovers Hidden Human Proteins and Functions, Advancing Cellular Research
New research, published in Nature, demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) combined with advanced experimental science is capable of identifying previously 'hidden' and unexplored proteins within the human body and elucidating their functions. This discovery offers a novel approach to understanding how cells communicate, manage stress, and potentially contribute to disease development. Researchers utilized AI to analyze the shapes of over 214 million predicted proteins. Instead of solely relying on genetic sequences, they focused on three-dimensional forms, which led to the identification of previously unknown members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family. GPCRs are crucial for cells to sense and respond to extracellular signals, playing a vital role in numerous physiological processes.
