STMicroelectronics Faces Criticism Over Water Usage Amid Drought in Isère
STMicroelectronics, a semiconductor manufacturer based in Crolles, Isère, is under scrutiny for its water consumption practices during a period of drought. The company has been exempt from water usage restrictions that apply to other businesses and individuals in the region. This has led to protests by the collective STopMicro, which symbolically shut off the water supply to the DREAL building in Grenoble to highlight the issue. STMicroelectronics claims to have a water management plan aimed at reducing and optimizing water usage, with a goal of achieving 60% water recycling in the medium term. Currently, the company recycles 41% of its water, according to its 2023 environmental report.
