Staten Island Leads NYC in Tree Canopy Coverage Amid Heat Concerns
New York City is focusing on expanding its urban tree canopy as part of a broader environmental justice initiative. According to NBC New York, the city aims to increase tree coverage to 30% by 2024. Currently, Staten Island boasts the highest tree canopy coverage at 33.1%, followed by The Bronx at 26.7%. Citywide, the coverage stands at 23.4%. The initiative is driven by the need to mitigate the effects of heat waves, which have been linked to premature deaths in the city. Over the past five years, an estimated 525 deaths were attributed to heat-related causes, highlighting the importance of tree cover in cooling urban areas and improving air quality.
