Texas High Schools to Implement Mandatory Heat Safety Rules
Starting August 1, Texas high schools will be required to follow new heat safety protocols for outdoor sports and marching band activities. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has mandated the use of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) monitoring to guide activity modifications. This decision follows the heatstroke death of a student-athlete, prompting the UIL to enforce stricter safety measures. Schools must adjust practice durations, mandate hydration breaks, and provide rapid-cooling zones based on real-time WBGT readings.
