U.S. Office of Personnel Management Addresses Federal Workforce Age Gap and Recruitment Challenges
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is actively working to address a significant age imbalance and recruitment challenge within the federal workforce. Currently, only 7% of federal employees are under the age of 30, a stark contrast to the 22% in the overall U.S. workforce. Conversely, 44% of federal employees are over 50, compared to 33% nationally. This demographic trend suggests that nearly half of the current federal workforce could retire within the next 5-10 years. OPM acknowledges that past recruitment efforts have been insufficient, particularly in engaging early career talent. To counter this, OPM has launched a 40-university tour to promote federal service opportunities and is utilizing social media to reach younger demographics. The agency emphasizes that the federal government, as the nation's largest employer with 2 million employees, offers a vast array of roles mirroring those in the private sector, from human resources and finance to IT and healthcare.
