Munich Court Rules Against Suno AI for Unauthorized Use of GEMA-Protected Music
The Munich Regional Court has ruled in favor of GEMA, a German music rights organization, in a case against Suno AI, a U.S.-based company. Suno AI was accused of using GEMA's members' music without proper licensing to train its AI models, which generate complete songs from text prompts. The court found that Suno AI's models retained and reproduced parts of the original works, constituting unauthorized copying under German copyright law. The court ordered Suno AI to cease using the protected works, disclose revenue related to the infringements, and pay damages, although the amount is yet to be determined. The ruling is not yet enforceable, and Suno AI plans to explore options, including an appeal.
