Purdue University Implements Mandatory AI Competency for All Undergraduates
Purdue University is set to become one of the first institutions in the nation to mandate artificial intelligence (AI) competency for all undergraduate students. Starting with the incoming fall class, all undergraduates will be required to complete AI-focused coursework as part of their core curriculum for graduation. This initiative aims to equip students with the skills to effectively use AI tools in their chosen fields, understand the technology's limitations, and prepare them for a workforce increasingly shaped by AI. Haley Oliver-Jischke, senior vice provost for academic and student success, emphasized that the goal is to foster critical thinking around AI and enable graduates to lead AI systems rather than be led by them. The university has developed or revised 22 courses and updated over 300 plans of study to integrate this new requirement, with courses ranging from one to four credit hours.
