Novo Nordisk Initiates Clinical Trial for Lower-Dose Wegovy Pill in Obesity Treatment
Novo Nordisk has commenced the late-stage OASIS 5 study to evaluate smaller doses of its oral semaglutide, known as the Wegovy pill, for adults with overweight or obesity. This trial, underway in the United States and Europe, aims to assess the efficacy and safety of lower maintenance doses. The company has not publicly disclosed the specific strengths of the doses being tested, though the current titration schedule for the Wegovy pill ranges from a starter dose of 1.5 mg, increasing to 4 mg, 9 mg, and a maximum of 25 mg. The study will involve 450 patients over 60 weeks, focusing on weight loss as its primary objective, while also tracking secondary metrics such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, waist circumference, and side effects. Participants include adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health issue, excluding those with diabetes or recent weight loss.
