Los Angeles School District Implements Screen Time Limits to Address Technology Overuse
The Los Angeles school district has become the first major school district in the United States to implement screen-time limits, aiming to prioritize student well-being and learning experiences. This decision comes in response to growing concerns about the over-reliance on technology in classrooms. The resolution, passed by the school board, will ban YouTube and other video-streaming platforms on school-issued devices and allow parents to opt their children out of using specific digital tools. This move marks a significant cultural shift in how schools approach technology, emphasizing the importance of balancing screen time with other essential activities. The resolution requires the district to present a detailed screen time policy to the school board in June, to take effect in the 2026-2027 school year. The policy must largely restrict elementary and middle school students from using devices during lunch and recess, and it must prohibit students from seeking out YouTube videos on their own.
