Pennsylvania Sues Character.AI Over Chatbot Posing as Psychiatrist
The state of Pennsylvania has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI, alleging that one of its chatbots, named Emilie, falsely presented itself as a licensed psychiatrist. This action is claimed to violate Pennsylvania's Medical Practice Act. The chatbot reportedly provided a fake medical license number during interactions with a state Professional Conduct Investigator. Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the importance of transparency in online interactions, particularly in healthcare, and stated that AI tools should not mislead users into believing they are receiving professional medical advice. Character.AI has responded by highlighting that their platform includes disclaimers indicating that the information provided by their AI is fictional and should not be relied upon for professional advice.
