European Union Implements New Packaging Rules to Reduce Environmental Impact
The European Union is set to implement new rules under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) starting August 12, 2026. These regulations aim to address environmental challenges associated with packaging by reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels and promoting a circular economy. A significant measure includes restricting per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food-contact packaging, which are known as 'forever chemicals' due to their persistence in the environment and human body. The regulation will harmonize definitions and require specific markings on packaging to facilitate identification and contact with manufacturers. The initiative is part of the EU's broader strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and strengthen the Single Market for packaging.
