European Union Plans Deportation Centers Outside Europe Amid Migration Policy Shift
The European Union is moving forward with plans to establish deportation centers outside Europe as part of its new Return Regulation. This initiative aims to manage asylum seekers by sending them to facilities in countries outside the continent, potentially in Africa or Asia. Cyprus's deputy minister for migration, Nicholas Ioannides, emphasized that host countries must guarantee the rights of deported individuals. The regulation has faced criticism from human rights organizations, which compare it to aggressive immigration policies seen in the United States under President Trump's administration. The EU's approach is intended to increase the number of removals of migrants whose asylum applications are rejected, with only 28% currently returning to their country of origin.
