South Africa Secures Chinese Support for $122 Billion Energy Expansion to Boost Manufacturing
South Africa has secured Chinese backing for a $122 billion energy expansion project aimed at modernizing its electricity system and boosting local manufacturing. The initiative, announced by Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa during a visit to China, seeks to attract financing, technology, and industrial partnerships to accelerate South Africa's energy transition. The project includes the generation of 105 gigawatts of new electricity and the expansion of transmission infrastructure by 2039. The plan encourages Chinese companies to establish manufacturing operations in South Africa, producing critical energy equipment locally. This approach is intended to reduce import dependence, strengthen industrial capacity, and create jobs, aligning with South Africa's broader industrial policy of integrating local manufacturers into global clean-energy supply chains.
