Capitol Hill Neighbors Revive Mott's Market as Community Hub
In a remarkable display of community solidarity, residents of Capitol Hill have successfully revived Mott's Market, a local store with over a century of history. The market, which had been a staple for emergency groceries and community interaction, faced closure in March 2022. In response, a group of about 100 neighbors organized to purchase the building for $1.31 million, overcoming a competing offer and numerous bureaucratic hurdles. The effort was spearheaded by Michael Skinner and Peyton Sherwood, who modernized the store with new features like an espresso bar and a patio. The reopening in June 2026 marked the culmination of four years of fundraising, renovations, and community engagement, including hosting events to maintain interest and support.
