Smoke from Southeast Wildfires Triggers Air Quality Alerts in South Carolina
Smoke from wildfires in Georgia and parts of Florida is spreading across South Carolina, leading to air quality alerts. The smoke, carried by prevailing southwest winds, has resulted in hazy skies and a noticeable smell of smoke throughout the region. The South Carolina Forestry Commission has confirmed that the smoke is primarily from Georgia's wildfires. Air quality readings have deteriorated, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching around 200 in the Augusta metro area, indicating unhealthy conditions. The AQI scale ranges from 0 to 500, with higher values representing more hazardous air quality. The situation is expected to persist through at least Saturday, particularly affecting the Savannah River Valley and the Lowcountry.
