Austria Expels Russian Diplomats Over Espionage Allegations Involving Antennas
Austria has expelled three Russian Embassy employees suspected of espionage activities using antennas on diplomatic buildings in Vienna. According to the Austrian Foreign Ministry, these antennas were allegedly used to intercept data from international organizations based in Vienna, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The Austrian public broadcaster ORF reported that the Russian diplomats were involved in spying activities, prompting Austria to take decisive action. The Russian ambassador was summoned, and the diplomats were asked to lift their immunity for investigation, which was refused, leading to their expulsion. Austria's Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger emphasized that espionage is a security issue and that diplomatic immunity should not be used for such activities.
