Meta Faces Federal Child Privacy Trial in California Over Allegations of Addictive Design
Meta is facing a federal trial in California where a coalition of 29 state attorneys general, co-led by California AG Rob Bonta, accuse the company of designing Instagram and Facebook to be addictive to children and violating child-privacy laws. Opening arguments began on Tuesday. New Mexico AG Raúl Torrez, who recently secured a nearly $1 billion judgment against Meta in a separate case, suggested the outcome of this trial could be "astronomical." Meta, in a court filing, estimated the states were seeking $1.4 trillion in penalties, though the states claim the figure is closer to $200 billion. The lawsuit alleges that Meta regularly collects data on children under 13 without parental consent and that the company's design features, such as infinite scrolling and constant notifications, are psychologically manipulative and designed to maximize engagement and profit.
