Social Media Trend Promotes Nicotine Pouches as Weight Loss Alternative to GLP-1 Drugs
A social media trend, dubbed 'O-Zyn-pic,' has emerged on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, promoting Zyn nicotine pouches as a low-cost alternative to GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss. This trend, which gained traction around May 2024, suggests that nicotine pouches, costing approximately $5 per tin, can achieve similar weight loss results to prescription medications that can cost over $1,000 per month. The premise is based on the known appetite-suppressing effect of nicotine, which activates specific satiety circuits in the brain. While nicotine does have a documented molecular mechanism for reducing food intake, health experts and regulatory bodies do not recommend its use for weight management due to significant health risks. The trend highlights the cost and accessibility issues associated with GLP-1 drugs, making the cheaper, readily available nicotine pouches an attractive, albeit medically unsupported, option for some individuals.
