Study Reveals Ovarian Development Changes in Girls Exposed to Tylenol In Utero
A Danish study has found that girls exposed to paracetamol (Tylenol) in the womb exhibited differences in several markers related to ovarian development, from infancy through adolescence. Researchers observed that daughters exposed to paracetamol during pregnancy tended to have smaller ovaries and uteruses, along with variations in ovarian activity. Specifically, exposure during early pregnancy was linked to reduced ovarian volume and smaller uterine volume, while later exposure was associated with fewer ovarian follicles. Lower levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a marker for ovarian reserve in adults, were also noted among some girls exposed early in pregnancy. These findings, published in Human Reproduction Open, add to existing evidence from animal studies suggesting that fetal exposure to paracetamol might have lasting effects on female reproductive health.
