Children's Hospital Colorado Pioneers Prenatal Cystic Fibrosis Treatment to Improve Lifelong Health Outcomes
Children's Hospital Colorado is leading a new approach in cystic fibrosis care by starting treatment before birth. This initiative, highlighted during Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, involves a multidisciplinary team from the Breathing Institute and Colorado Fetal Care Center. They have provided prenatal therapy to 10 families, making them the most experienced in the U.S. for such care. The early intervention has shown significant improvements in health outcomes, such as resolving meconium ileus, a serious bowel blockage, before birth, and enhancing pancreatic function. This approach reduces the need for neonatal intensive care and supports healthier lung development, potentially extending life expectancy for those with cystic fibrosis.
