Settlement Allows Institute of Museum and Library Services to Continue Operations Amid Trump Administration's Executive Order
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) will continue its operations following a settlement between the American Library Association (ALA), the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and the Trump administration. This agreement, reached on April 9, reverses the effects of an Executive Order issued by the White House last year, which aimed to reduce federal bureaucracy and had placed the entire IMLS staff on administrative leave. The ALA and AFSCME had filed a lawsuit to prevent the dismantling of the IMLS, leading to a temporary restraining order by a federal judge in May that halted further actions against the agency. The settlement ensures that IMLS can continue awarding grants, conducting research, and supporting libraries and museums across the United States. It also reverses previous grant terminations and staff reductions initiated by the Executive Order.
