K-12 Districts Face New ADA Title II Compliance Requirements for Digital Accessibility
The U.S. Department of Justice has updated Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, mandating that digital accessibility becomes a systemwide requirement for K-12 districts and other state and local government services serving populations of 50,000 or more. By April 24, 2026, these institutions must ensure their digital content, including websites, mobile apps, and digital course materials, meets accessibility standards aligned with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 Level AA. This shift requires districts to ensure videos are captioned, images include alt text, and documents are formatted for screen readers, among other requirements. The update aims to make digital environments usable for individuals with disabilities, moving from a reactive to a proactive compliance model.
