1987 Garbage Barge Incident Highlights U.S. Waste Management Challenges
In 1987, a barge named Mobro 4000, carrying 3,186 tons of New York garbage, embarked on a journey to find a landfill but was rejected by multiple states and countries. The barge, owned by businessman Lowell Harrelson, aimed to dispose of the waste cheaply and capture methane gas for sale. However, due to rumors of medical waste contamination, the barge was denied entry at several ports, including those in Mexico, Belize, and the Bahamas. After traveling over 6,000 miles and being at sea for five months, the barge returned to New York, where the waste was eventually incinerated in Brooklyn.
