Northern Lights Partnership Expands CO2 Carrier Operations for Carbon Capture and Storage
The Northern Lights partnership, consisting of Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, has initiated commercial operations of CO2 carriers designed for carbon capture and storage (CCS). The project aims to transport and store CO2 to meet net-zero emissions targets by 2050. The initial capacity is set at 1.5 million tonnes per year, with plans to expand to 5 million tonnes by 2028. The carriers transport CO2 to a facility in Norway for permanent storage under the seabed. The sector is rapidly developing, with new partnerships and vessels being commissioned to meet the anticipated demand for CO2 transport and storage.
