Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy Engages with Mining Company Over Land Claim
The Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy (EBC) has initiated discussions with McFarlane Lake Mining Inc. regarding a staked claim on the EBC Heaven’s Gate Trail. The conservancy, which owns the land, aims to protect it from mining activities. The land, acquired in 2001, spans 1,900 acres and serves as a sanctuary for various wildlife species. Despite the claim, the mining company has been open to dialogue with EBC. The conservancy has filed an objection to the claim and is exploring legal protections, given the public funding used to secure the land. Under current Ontario law, privately conserved lands do not automatically receive protection from mining claims.
