New York City Unveils Urban Forest Plan to Combat Heat
New York City has introduced its first-ever urban forest plan, aiming to increase tree canopy coverage to 30% by 2024. Currently, the city's tree canopy covers less than a quarter of its area, with Staten Island having the highest coverage at 33.1%. The initiative is part of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's climate and environmental justice agenda, which seeks to address the unequal distribution of tree cover across the city. The plan highlights the importance of trees in beautifying the city, supporting wildlife, improving air quality, and providing protection during heat waves. According to city data, over 500 New Yorkers die prematurely each year due to heat, with only 1% of these deaths directly caused by heat, while the rest are due to heat exacerbating existing health conditions.
