OpenAI Foundation Pledges $100 Million to Boost U.S. Hepatitis C Cure Rates with AI
The OpenAI Foundation has committed $100 million to a new public health initiative in the United States, aiming to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to improve hepatitis C cure rates. This initiative, named Breakthroughs to Follow-Through (B2F), is a partnership with the Common Health Coalition. The program's initial focus is on hepatitis C, with plans to expand to other areas like HIV prevention and treatable cancers if successful. Despite oral medicines being able to cure over 95% of hepatitis C patients in a short period, approximately two-thirds of those with the condition in the U.S. remain untreated, leading to around 40 preventable deaths daily. The B2F program will deploy AI-enabled tools to help states and local jurisdictions identify and re-engage patients who have fallen out of the treatment pathway.
