Iraqi MP Disputes September 30 Deadline for Weapons Control, Citing US Influence
State of Law Coalition member Zuhair Al-Chalabi has stated that September 30 is not a firm deadline for bringing weapons under state control in Iraq. Al-Chalabi suggests that the issue could be addressed differently after the withdrawal of US and Turkish forces from Iraq, including those stationed at the Zilkan camp in Nineveh province. He also highlighted the current focus on submitting the Popular Mobilization Forces Service and Retirement Law to parliament for approval, arguing that its passage would challenge Washington. Al-Chalabi accused the US chargé d’affaires of previously pressuring to influence the legislative process and force the bill’s withdrawal.
