Consumer Reports Highlights Top Sunscreens for Summer Protection
Consumer Reports has released its annual sunscreen ratings, evaluating over 100 products to guide consumers in selecting effective sun protection. The testing assessed SPF (sun protection factor) by applying sunscreen to skin samples and exposing them to controlled UV light to measure sunburn prevention. Water-resistant sunscreens were also tested by immersing panelists in water for up to 80 minutes before UV exposure. The report found that while some sunscreens did not meet their labeled SPF claims, they still provided significant protection. Coppertone Water Babies Lotion SPF 50 received a perfect overall score, while Eucerin Advanced Hydration Spray SPF 50 ranked highest among sprays. The study also evaluated UVA protection, which is linked to aging and skin cancer, by measuring UV light transmission through sunscreen-coated plates. Experts emphasize the importance of using sunscreen, recommending broad-spectrum products with at least SPF 30.
