MIT Study Reveals Expanded Language Network in the Human Brain
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have discovered that language processing in the human brain extends beyond the traditional speech centers to include 17 additional regions. These areas, identified through fMRI scans of 772 participants, are linked to memory, emotion, and movement, forming a broader network that supports language comprehension and use. The study challenges the long-held belief that language is confined to specific areas like Broca's region, instead suggesting a more integrated system that involves the cerebellum, hippocampus, and amygdala. This network, while expanded, occupies only about 5% of the brain's volume.
