Fall Feels Far Away as Record Heat Grips the US
Meteorological fall began Sept. 1, but much of the U.S. is still experiencing summer-like heat. The first half of September has been the hottest on record for dozens of cities from Colorado and New Mexico to Virginia and North Carolina, with parts of the Plains and Mississippi Valley running 6 to 12 degrees above normal. A persistent heat dome will keep many Southern Plains and Southeast locations in the 90s through the weekend, with some nearing 100°F. Relief should reach Kansas, Missouri and Illinois early next week, while parts of Texas, Louisiana and the lower Mississippi Valley may stay hot through late September.
