Urban Explorers Enter New York City's Sewer System, Raising Safety Concerns
Recent surveillance footage has captured small groups of individuals entering and exiting New York City's sewer system in Brooklyn and Queens. Former urban explorer Steve Duncan, who has previously documented the city's underground tunnels, suggests these individuals are likely explorers. The sewer system, which spans 7,400 miles, includes large 19th-century mains that are both illegal and dangerous to enter. These tunnels, some of which follow the paths of old waterways, are known for their challenging conditions, including cockroaches and potential health hazards. Despite the risks, the explorers appear to have planned their excursions carefully, choosing times when the system is less active. Police are investigating the incidents but do not currently see a threat to public safety.
